Brooke Parsons
As the Consumer Consultant for the Stroke Theme at the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health, I have dedicated my life to stroke advocacy and support. Overcoming significant challenges since experiencing a stroke at just 13 years old, I have been left with several chronic health conditions and significant disabilities. Now, 31 years on, despite enduring physical and emotional pain, I have never given up. My strength has been fuelled by the unwavering support of friends, family, and healthcare professionals.
I have formed deep bonds with other survivors and actively participated in organisations such as the Florey, the Stroke Foundation, International Stroke Recovery and Rehabilitation Alliance (ISRRA), Centre of Research Excellence to Accelerate Innovation in Stroke Trials (CRE) and the Brain Health Team at the George Institute for Global Health Australia. My involvement at the Florey Institute includes contributing as a Consumer Consultant for various projects and trials, including the Young Stroke Service. Here, I work alongside my colleagues and an incredible group of individuals with lived experience who significantly contribute to the Young Stroke Service.
Though my journey has been long and painful, I wear my scars with pride and view my story as one of hope and resilience. Through my work and personal experiences, I aim to inspire and support others facing similar challenges, demonstrating that perseverance and community can lead to profound impact and personal growth.
