Introduction: Stroke services are most successful when influenced by the voice of consumers. However, when strokes affect the ability to communicate, a disability called “aphasia” occurs, and self-advocacy is more difficult. Aphasia camps are a way of supporting the confidence and unmet psychosocial needs of people with aphasia through establishing new relationships, and self-advocacy. As there are only two camps Australia-wide, the aim is to conduct an empowerment evaluation with key stakeholders to create a plan for the successful continuation of this program.
Methods: A mixed methods design included a Nominal Group Technique (NGT) where participants shared ideas (analysed through content analysis) and ranked them (reported with descriptive statistics). Participants from the Gold Coast aphasia camp were recruited and engaged in their first meeting when attending the camp. The empowerment evaluation was facilitated through discussion and co-production, with an emphasis on generating ideas from attendees about how to enhance the program.
Results: Seven participants (camp attendees and facilitators) contributed to the meeting. Preliminary results included an established mission focusing on the creation of a safe space to connect, share, and support each other. Associated activities to achieve this mission included the identification of funding, organisation of events, education of others, and exploration of social activities. The goal to establish an aphasia camp committee was reinforced by the assignment of roles and tasks which the evaluator has continued to support.
Conclusion: The empowerment evaluation enabled key stakeholders from the Gold Coast aphasia camp to develop an action plan informed by their mission and reflection on the activities required to achieve this mission.
Relevance to clinical practice or patient experience: Empowering the most vulnerable stroke survivors to have an active voice and plan their ongoing support services will provide valuable insight into the creation of sustainable models of care for chronic conditions.
